Howard worked as a journalist and sports writer in the UK working mainly in the Southampton area.

In September 1986 to September 1990 he became the Project Manager/Communications Director of the Maiden campaign, the first all-female crew to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race.

In 1993 – 1994 he became Shore Manager of the ‘Heineken’ WRTWR campaign.

Between 2002 and 2003, Howard became the Project Manager for the ‘Maiden 2’ maxi-catamaran campaign.

In recent years, Howard was the Project Manager for Volvo Ocean Race Legends – a regatta and reunion for former Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Race sailors and boats staged in Alicante, Spain prior to the Volvo Ocean Race, 2011-12.
